Dalits - former Untouchables

Roughly 16 percent of India's population, that makes nearly 170 Million individuals, are been downlooked by the rest of society. They are perceived as minor, polluting, dumb and dirty. Earlier they were called untouchables because caste-hindus percieved their touch as spiritually polluting. They proudly call themselves Dalits - the broken people to alarm society about their fate.

Most Dalits live in slums.

Washermen, shoemaker, cleaner and garbageworker are their traditional occupations

Come April and Dalits celebrate the birthday of their leader, B.R. Ambedkar. They decorate his statues and pray for his wellbeing.
