Mela Yellamma

Hindu-pilgrimage to the small town of Saundatti in the northern parts of Karnataka State

Goddess Yellamma is worshipped mainly by Dalits, the earstwhile untouchables

Young girls are married to the Goddess and will spend their life serving them as so-called Devadasi

Because many Devadasis end up in prostitution, the ritual of marriage to Yellamma is banned by law and is persecuted at the Saundatti fair
